Local Heating Contractor Offers Life Saving Reminder

Potential poisoning by carbon dioxide is serious issue, said Greg of GV’s Heating & Cooling.

“Carbon dioxide is an odorless and colorless gas produced by faulty gas heating systems– and it can kill you,” he said.

With the weather cooling off and heating systems warming up, now is a good time to have your furnace inspected, he added.

Fuel-burning appliances—such as furnaces, stoves, fireplaces, and space heaters—can be used safely if they’re properly installed and maintained.  “But common conditions can enable them to produce carbon dioxide,” Greg said.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends that yearly, professional inspection include:

  • Checking chimneys, flues and vents for leakage and blockage by creosote and debris
  • Checking all vents to furnaces, water heaters, boilers and other fuel-burning appliances to make sure they are not loose or disconnected
  • Inspecting vent pipes on heating systems
  • Inspecting appliances for adequate ventilation. A supply of fresh air is important to help carry pollutants up the chimney, stovepipe or flue, and is necessary for the complete combustion of any fuel.
  • Making sure ventilation air openings aren’t blocked

Greg added that the Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends a CO inspection and a detector in your home to improve your safety.

“You want to be warm and safe in your home this winter. Greg advised, “Get your furnace inspected by a qualified professional. Make sure that if your home has gas heat, you get a carbon monoxide check. You may save a lot more than just energy.”

Homework Lab open at The Glenview Learning Center!

Local tutoring center is opening a Homework Lab for students in grades 3 and up.  Managing Director and Owner, Laura Horwitz, has seen the need for students to have a quiet place to do homework away from distractions.  With two school age students of her own and a younger sibling, homework time at her house can get hectic.  She has also talked with other parents who struggle with getting homework completed and have had tense moments trying to help their students.   Listening to the needs of parents and families, Laura has decided to provide help for local families that are struggling with this issue.  The Glenview Learning Center has a wonderful Homework Lab that will offer assistance for local students.

The Homework Lab is a warm and inviting setting away from distractions such as TV, siblings, neighbors, and other distractions.  The lab will be supervised by qualified tutors who can answer general questions and help students focus on their work.  There will be basic school supplies and a computer for supervised internet research.

You can sign up for the Homework Lab for afterschool or evening sessions and can choose how many days (1-4) a week to attend.

For more information and a free session to the Homework Lab, please contact Laura Horwitz at 847-998-5657 or at lhorwitz@collegenannies.com.

NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP PANTRY

The Northfield Township Food Pantry provides assistance to residents of Glenview, Northbrook and Northfield who are unable to provide enough food for themselves and their families.  The number of families turning to the Pantry for assistance has more than doubled since May 2008.  Currently, over 465 local families are eligible to visit the Pantry each month to receive food and grocery store cards.

The Pantry relies entirely on donations from the community in order to provide this much-needed assistance.  No tax dollars are used to supply the Pantry.

How can you help?  Consider organizing a food drive, volunteer, support Pantry fundraisers, make a monetary donation or help raise awareness about the Pantry and its services.

Donations can be dropped off Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Thursdays 8:30 am – 8:00 pm, and the first and second Saturdays 9 am – 12 pm (through May).   Financial donations can be mail or made through the Pantry’s website.

Holiday Menus
Dear Friends,
I am so excited to say Spring is in the air!  The birds are singing, sun shining, and...okay, I get ahead of myself, but it does seem like a whiff of Spring is in the air, doesn't it? And here at Zingarella we are making plans for not just Spring, but looking ahead to Summer.  We will be returning to the Glenview Farmers Market and joining the Wednesday Northbrook Market. Chef Armando and I are testing dishes for our new Spring menu in addition to working on all the upcoming holiday menus.  And we are planning an exciting renovation in our store, where we will be putting in a full-bar, adding more tables and booths and refurbishing our existing dining room.  Once our renovation is complete, we will schedule our next Cabaret and Opera Night, so look for more information.  So come on in for a meal or snack or just to chat.  And as always, thank you for your continued patronage and support.  It's been a long winter and we always appreciate your business.    To Spring!!  Bonnie  Zingarella

We will discuss the book over a delicious Southern dinner and dessert.
