Got Green jobs? Jump at this opportunity. Green jobs are sometimes defined as blue-collar jobs in green industries. Examples might include:

Renewable energy infrastructure, weatherization [i.e., window companies], energy efficiency, building retrofitting and advanced vehicle manufacturing. If you’re in these industries you may be able to get quick funds to train apprentices in careers in the Green sector.

Skills training is available to unemployed and low-income adults. Training in high-growth, high-demand occupations is also available. This includes customized training where the Workforce Board pays up to 50 percent of the cost of training workers for employers who agree to employ trainees, and includes on-the-job training for incumbent workers with a focus on job retention and career advancement.

The Workforce Board also provides information through the Illinois WorkNet portal: www.illinoisworknet.com.

It offers information pathways in three critical areas:

  1. Individuals can post online resumes, evaluate careers, education and training
  2. Businesses can recruit and train employees, receive online training
  3. It also provides real-time to third-party databases in key sectors and News & Events sections where you can locate on-the-job training resources and labor market information.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity also has information on several community grants available, including assistance for:

  • low-income people to attain skills,
  • businesses to develop cost-effective energy projects that create jobs, and
  • a special Weatherization Program. Why? Because projections are that about 30,000 homes in Illinois will be weatherized in 2010, and 40,000 in 2011.

In addition, the Treasury Dept. is committing funds to secure small business loans and the Small Business Administration is implementing favorable policies on some of its loans.
